What We Fit
Fold-Arm Awnings for Groenkloof Homes
Retractable fabric shade on spring-tensioned folding arms — no posts, no permanent roof — turning a heritage veranda or reserve-facing patio back into a room whenever the sun demands it.

Why Groenkloof verandas want one
Many Groenkloof homes were built with deep verandas long before air conditioning was standard — a good instinct that a fold-arm awning simply extends. It turns a baking north- or west-facing patio back into a usable room in summer, then retracts to let welcome winter sun through, which a fixed roof can never do. With no posts holding it up, there's no interrupted reserve view and no clutter around the braai.
What you're buying
Projection runs to roughly 3–4m over wide spans, in solution-dyed acrylic fabrics that hold their colour under Pretoria's strong UV. You can choose a full cassette — fabric and arms sealed away completely, the better option for weather-exposed positions — a semi-cassette, or open mounting for a simpler budget.
Motor + wind sensor: the responsible spec
An awning caught open in a highveld thunderstorm gust can be destroyed in seconds. A motorised awning with a wind sensor retracts itself automatically before that happens, protecting an investment that a crank handle simply can't. It's the specification we recommend on every exposed Groenkloof veranda.
Honest limitations
An awning is a shade product, not a rain product — it copes with light drizzle at a pitch, never storm rain or standing water. Wind ratings are real limits, not suggestions, and the fixing substrate matters: brick, timber and steel all behave differently, which is exactly what we check at the free measure rather than guessing from a photo.
Where We Fit Fold-Arm Awnings
Deep verandas and sun-baked patios aren't unique to Groenkloof — we fit fold-arm awnings on the same free-measure basis across Waterkloof, Waterkloof Ridge, Brooklyn and Menlo Park, wherever a north- or west-facing stoep needs shade on demand.
What It Costs
Priced on the shade it covers
An awning is costed on width multiplied by projection, and the guide, installed, is R3,500 to R5,500 per square metre for a crank-handle unit and R5,500 to R7,500 per square metre motorised with a wind sensor. A full cassette that closes the fabric away, and the longer projections, both sit near the top of their band.
A short awning over one door carries a minimum charge, because the arms, the cassette and the wall fixing are the same job whatever the width. Given how quickly a Pretoria afternoon storm arrives, the exposure of the veranda matters more to the specification than the size does, and that is read at the free measure before any written price is put together.
